Soundworks

Soundworks is an intergenerational SEND music after school club. We work with SEND children and their parents and carers to explore playing music and exploring sound making in group settings. We use traditional instruments, music technology and accessible music making tools to ensure everyone can take part.

Popular songs, composition, exploration of sound, audio recording, podcasting, poetry, story telling and public performance are themes we explore together.

Sessions are weekly during term time as well as clubs during school holidays. Soundworks is delivered in collaboration with the East Sussex family hub programme and are currently held at the Hailsham and Sidley Family Hubs, East Sussex.

‘Soundworks music sessions are fantastic for children with SEND. Music can express, articulate and channel feelings that cannot be put into words. The experience of live music making with traditional and digital instruments has been very educational and fun’

Parent/Carer

‘I love seeing my friends and trying new instruments, it makes me happy. I also love to sing’

Participant

‘I have enjoyed seeing my son engage happily with the sessions and learning about the different techniques in music. He comes to life when he is playing the instruments and experiencing different sounds’

Exploring sound

As well as approaching music making in traditional ways through playing conventional instruments we also like to explore the sounds we can make from everyday objects, home made instruments and technology. The children make soundscapes and recordings documenting these adventures in sound exploration

“I wasn’t sure if he would appreciate this theme but as soon as he heard the sounds of the kitchen items he wanted to join in, I could see he was fascinated’
